The history of Southeastern Regional Medical Center (SRMC) dates back to 1906 when Dr. Neil A. Thompson opened the first hospital in Robeson County. The Thompson Hospital consolidated with the Baker Sanatorium, under the direction of Dr. Horace M. Baker Sr., to form the Baker-Thompson Memorial Hospital in 1946.
These two older facilities were replaced by a new 140-bed hospital known as Robeson County Memorial Hospital in 1953. On January 1, 1960, the hospital's name was changed to Southeastern General Hospital to reflect more accurately our service to all of southeastern North Carolina.
In 1994, after a number of expansion programs, our facility became Southeastern Regional Medical Center, licensed for 314 beds and offering a combination of acute care, intensive care and psychiatric services to over 13,000 inpatients and 75,000 outpatients annually. As a non-profit organization, SRMC is operated by a local 15-member board of trustees whose only compensation is the assurance that they are making available quality health care for their community.
One of the largest employers in the region with about 1,900 employees, SRMC also includes more than 150 physicians on its progressive medical staff. Together, they demonstrate our values as they work to fulfill our mission as the major health care provider in the area.
Since 1962, SRMC has been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). That approval is evidence that our facility has been measured by national standards developed by the Joint Commission and found to be well-equipped, well-run and well-staffed.
SRMC is the hub of a comprehensive health care system that serves the health care needs of Robeson and surrounding counties. Through these affiliated divisions, SRMC can offer a full range of health care services to meet the needs of the entire community: Community Health Education Center (CHEC); Diabetes Community Center; Gibson Cancer Center; Privileges Plus, Southeastern Heart Center managed by Duke University Health System; Southeastern Home Care Services; Southeastern Home Medical Equipment; Southeastern Lifestyle Center for Fitness and Rehabilitation; Southeastern Occupational Health WORKS; Southeastern Recovery Alternatives, Southeastern Regional Medical Center Foundation; WoodHaven Nursing and Alzheimer's Care Center; and six primary care clinics and one urgent care clinic located throughout the Robeson County.
